Why measuring success is important to any project

How do you know if your project has been a success, and why are success stories so important?  Projects can be complicated or hard to explain, and success stories help bring meaning and memorability in 3 ways:

  • Success stories create awareness for the need for an innovation or change
  • Success stories create an appetite for people to get on board and support the project
  • Success stories make behaviour change real because they show people leading by example and making impactful changes

Success stories can have a huge impact and create project visibility, credibility and clarity, and successful projects are referred to long after the project ends by a far wider set of advocates than the original team (as they say, success has many fathers!).

But, there’s a challenge.  In order to have a good success story, you need to be able to measure success.  Using the right measurement makes it easier for people to understand  the value and impact of your project.  And measuring success has to start at the beginning of the project, not at the end.

In order to get industry best practice we interviewed capability and innovation clients working in the biggest global businesses, and measurement experts from Qualtrics, DFID and IPSOS.

Our research has shown us:

  • There is not a ‘one size fits all’ method of setting targets and measuring success
  • There are many ways to go about measurement, both qualitatively and quantitatively
  • Measuring behaviour change is subjective to teams and company culture
  • The way we set project targets and measure against them needs to be constantly re-evaluated and be ready to adapt to the changing needs of a business.

From our interviews and research, we have designed a 2 hour free online training session to provide you with a best practice toolkit for Measuring Success, featuring 3 key stages:

  1. Setting the right project targets
  2. Choosing and applying the right measurement tools
  3. Using measurements in your business for impact

In each area we will be exploring the pitfalls, best practice examples and finally we’ll do a big reveal on tools and techniques.

You will leave the training with:

  • A new appreciation for the power of measuring success
  • Confidence to engage in measurement conversations in your business and with your partners
  • A toolkit of best practice tools and techniques to help you measure success within your business

Whether you are agency or client side make sure you create maximum impact through your projects and workshops by telling a compelling success story driven by measurement.
